When the count started rumours had it that Berlusconi was 10-15% ahead now it's looking more like 4-5%. But we all know that exit-polls are unreliable and in the light of Italy's new voting system they make even less sense. Indeed the majority system allows the winner to collect a disproportionate number of seats. Just look at the official figures to see how the Casa della Libertà's (Berlusconi's centre-right coalition) modest victory has turned into a runaway win, much to the loss of the smaller parties, who will find little space in this bi-party system. Whatever the system now's the time for the losers to muse over their mistakes and the winners to come good on the pre-electoral promises made to the Italian people.
