Alfred Sisley - Poet of Impressionism

This exhibition - organised by Ferrara Arte, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyons – is the first in Italy to be dedicated to the artist. It reconstructs the various phases of Sisley's creative journey and the sources of his inspiration through a selection of 80 paintings.

Italy's oldest music festival, Maggio Musicale, opens on Saturday May 11th in Florence's Teatro Comunale with Les Trojans. Conducting is festival stalwart and international star Zubin Mehta. Mehta will also close the festival on July 6th with Verdi's Te Deum and Mahler's Symphony 1 in D Major. Don't miss the festival fund-raising event on May 17th when top international wine makers and collectors come together to auction their prized plonk.

Dubuffet and Grafitti Art

An important exhibition dedicated to the great French artist. Works on show are from the latter period of the artist's life and include the vibrant Mires series and the collection of Non-lieux. The exhibition also includes works of some of the most renowned international grafitti artists, some of whom will create their own live installations specifically for the exhibition.

The delicate relationship between man and nature is explored in this evocative exhibition by the Canadian photographer Gregory Colbert. The photos were taken over a ten-year period with particular emphasis on the magical universe of elephants - "nature's living masterpieces" in Colbert's words.

The art scene in Naples goes (literally) underground with the opening of Piazza Dante metro station. The station was designed by the renowned architect Gae Aulenti and provides an exciting new space for both Italian and international contemporary art. Piazza Dante is the fourth metro station in Naples to become an active exhibition space (Cilea, Salvator Rosa and Museo opened their doors to art in April 2001). In the words of Gae Aulenti: "it's a way to get to people in direct contact with art, avoiding the psychological barrier that is often created by a museum."

Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel reopens
Padua

Giotto's newly restored masterpiece reopens to the public on the same day (March 25th) that his patron Enrico Scrovegni opened the frescoed chapel in 1305. Advance booking is advisable as only a limited number of visitors will be admitted to the chapel in order to protect the frescoes. And remember, up until February 17th you can still book a guided tour of the frescoes during restoration.

The Leaning Tower reopens
Pisa's famous tower reopens to the public after 12 years of work. Visits will be limited to 25 people at a time for a maximum of 30 minutes per visit. For 15 Euros visitors can climb to the top of the Tower, or rather to the railings overlooking the belfry, while they'll no longer be able to walk around the picturesque arcades. Baroque painting in Genoa

The first ever exhibition of Genoese painting in Britain brings together a collection of international artists all of whom painted in Genoa in the 17th century. Highlights include Ruben's Equestrian Portrait of Giovan Carlo Doria and Valerio Castello's Rape of Proserpine. A series of lunchtime and evening lectures tie in with the event explaining the principles of Baroque and a video and catalogue of the exhibition are also available.
